Tori’s Motorcycle Drive By
BRITTANY CHAMBERLAIN: Tori, I can’t express in words how much I love the uniqueness of your 3eb tattoo and how excited I am to interview you about it! This lyric is one of the most beloved Third Eye Blind lyrics of all time. I think it goes without saying that MDB is the dark horse of the self-titled album. It means so much to so many and for countless different reasons. Tell me about your love of the band. When did you first become a fan? Did you grow up as a die hard fan? Can you pick a favorite album?
TORI HAWKINS: I've been a fan since I was old enough to discover good music, so it has been a while. Although, I'm around the same age as the debut. It's also definitely my favorite. Seeing them perform it in its entirety this summer in Toronto was well worth the 17 hour drive! A night I will never forget. Truly inspiring and breathtaking to see something you've listened to on repeat for years played out in front of you by the very person who created it. One of the happiest moments of my life.
B: What’s the story behind the tattoo? Can you fill us in on what the song means to you? Were you in the throes of a major life event or transition? Was there any significant timing to your tattoo?
T: I've had the idea for this tattoo for a long time, after I saw them in Toronto, it was the final push, so I finally had it done. It's now my favorite of my 5 tattoos although it is the simplest. I find myself connecting to a lot of tracks from the debut, but by far, MDB is the one that hits home. I'm pretty open about my mental health, so it's no secret I've had my share of struggles. "Never been so alone, never been so alive" means a lot. I wasn't always as open as I am now about my own mental illness, as I'm a very independent person. I don't like to seek help from others during difficult times, even when [sometimes] it would make my life much easier if I did. I've learned to accept that that is okay. There's no textbook definition of recovery that works for everyone; it varies person to person. I've learned the hard way, that I can get myself through a lot more than I ever thought, even when I've lost people that I thought would always be there. That's not saying certain people (and bands) haven't helped a lot along the way, but this tattoo is a representation of me giving myself a little credit. I'm alive. And that is largely due to myself.
B: Mental health is a cause we care about in the 3eb community. I really appreciate your genuine and sincere answers when addressing your own personal struggle. It makes me love this tattoo even more. I also admire your ability to share the credit with yourself, as well as your loved ones. You deserve it!
B: You chose a classy and simple script for the tattoo. I think that it looks absolutely perfect as a stand-alone tattoo. How did you choose the placement?
T: Honestly, the placement just popped into my head. When I thought of the lyrics on me, that's where I pictured! I'm super happy with it, credit goes to my friend/tattoo artist Jake Jeffrey :) instagram: sonsalem_tattooer
B: If you could ask Stephan a question about MDB, what would it be?
T: Oh gosh, this is a hard one. If I could ask him anything about MDB, I think it'd be what he was really feeling when he wrote it. As a listener, you can infer a lot from the song's meaning, and it varies widely person to person, but I think we all reach a general consensus on what it's about. You can almost tell what he's feeling in the way he performs the song, but how does that vary from how he feels when he wrote it.
B: I love seeing the different ideas and visions that fans with tattoos come up with. Do you plan to get more 3eb ink?
T: I've been thinking a lot about it lately, more 3eb ink! It’s addicting for sure. I have a few ideas in mind, so we'll see!
B: Does your significant other share your love for 3eb?
T: No unfortunately hahaha, he likes 3eb but doesn't share my complete obsession. I do have 2 close friends who I go to every show with though :) I've attached a photo of us before the last show :) Mason Wells & Jakub Mcgarrigle!
B: Stephan loves when fans pay tribute to the band through tattoos. Would you like to personally thank Stephan, Brad, Kryz, Kopp, and/or LeCav for anything or relay a message to them?
T: I'd like to thank them for giving me the soundtrack to my life. Their music has done more for me than I could ever explain and I could never thank them enough.
