Travis Wagner’s Misfit Ink
Third Eye Blind has built a foundation for a community in which people have found ways to connect with one another in a world that they otherwise feel like a Misfit.
In this segment of 3eb INK, Travis Wagner explains the importance of Out of the Vein in his life and what the song “Misfits” has meant to him. His tattoo, the rock-n-roll kid’s guitar from the cover of OOTV is an Easter egg of sorts that only Third Eye Blind fans would find.
Brittney Chamberlain: Travis, 3eb ink shows some serious dedication to the band. How long have you been a fan?
Travis Wagner: I have been a fan since 1997. I have seen them in concert at least 7 times.
BC: Tell me how you chose this art? Is OOTV your favorite 3eb album?
TW: Yes, OOTV is my favorite album. It was one of the most influential albums of my high school years.
BC: What song (or songs) speak to you the most on this album and why?
TW: Misfits is one song that sticks out to me because I attended a very strict school and my three best friends and I were always considered outcasts who never quite fit in.
BC: Were you motivated to get this tattoo by a major life event, a significant person, or life transition?
TW: Shortly after graduating, my three best friends joined the military. This album helped us stay close even though they were miles away. Being able to listen to this music and remember all the memories we’d had helped me stay positive while they were overseas.
BC: Can you elaborate a little further on how OOTV embodied your friendship?
TW: The music helped my friends and I find our individuality. As teens, we were expected to dress a certain way, act a certain way, and we were not allowed to watch certain shows and movies, but music was the one thing that couldn’t be taken away from us. My friends and I were always different from the rest of the kids we went to school with. We didn’t fall for the normal “you better act this way” mentality. After a few years of not seeing each other, from them being in the military, we finally met up and played this song and sang it in unity and never missed a beat.
BC: From the Misfit perspective, can you give us a top 5 3eb playlist?
TW: “Dopamine,” “Losing a Whole Year,” “Crystal Baller,” “Graduate,” “Faster.”
BC: If you could ask Stephan Jenkins one thing about one song from OOTV, what would it be?
TW: I would ask him what his inspiration was when writing Misfits. That song means so much to my life, I would love to hear how he came to write it.
BC: Do you plan on getting more ink?
TW: Of course!
