I want everyone to have a lifetime supply of beer and easy access to Kambucha and blueberries.
You guys have seen a lot of change happen in the world of music, plummeting cd sales, an increase and ease to pirating, cookie cutter artists being churned out at alarming rates by record companies. Some established artists seem to have become embittered by these negative hits against the structure and credibility of their industry and thus retreated from their art. What has kept you guys positive about the future of music? What inspires you to try and evolve with the industry rather than rebelling against it?
Rather than rebelling against it? I am so rebelling against it! Look at thirdeyeblind.com. It’s a record company, it’s a facebook/myspace page, it’s pirate radio, it’s a record store, it’s YouTube, MTV, and a music magazine all to our own standards, all for our own people. I’m a straight up rebel. I feel like I’m wearing a God Damn pirate hat. It’s the wild west and I’m a rootin-tootin, boot-scootin tush-pushin, yippie-ay-yay cowboy. I can’t tell you how great it is to wake up in the morning and not ask anyone for permission to reach people with music. There are so many people who view music as a check (the biz), or a curiosity (music media and the self-appointed false arbiters ‘what is the alternative wing?’) and they’ll suck the blood right out of your soul. You guys know there’s only room for one set of vampires here, and that’s us. I want some glory without sacrificing terms. I want Rock and Roll without apology or accommodation. I want freedom, transcendence, sex, beloved chaos and spontaneity coming through my headphones. I want the infidels’ head on a fuckin’ pike. I want butterflies flying out of the back of your head. I want every rock show to be a giant sleep over. I want peace and kindness and respect without separation for everyone. I want everyone to have a lifetime supply of beer and easy access to Kambucha and blueberries. I’m telling you, our maximum point of power is NOW! :)
