It is very likely you’re unfamiliar with Sabrina Ellis, but you’re going to be so happy to know her name and the projects she is involved with after reading this article.
Sabrina Ellis, of Austin, TX, fronts 2 bands you need to know right now… A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit.
I really wanted to feature the punk rock band A Giant Dog , who are hot off an album release, but Sabrina Ellis seems to be the powerhouse to spotlight, seeing as she links the two projects.
First, let’s get the fact that I LOVE AUSTIN out of the way. My eyes are always peeled for flight deals! My best friend lives out there, where he rocks bass for two bands, Fools and Deals. Him being well connected to the music scene there allows for me to see some pretty amazing shows when I visit from Michigan. I was down for the SXSW shows this time last year and, trust me, I did all I could to run into or catch 3eb live while we were enjoying adventures in the same city. We were more so taking part in the unofficial set of shows though.
One of those adventures was a trip to Spiderhouse ATX. I’m obsessed with this venue and had a magical first night in Austin there. The patio stages, indoor stages, photo booth… I love it all. The reason for the show escapes me (it might have been a release party or anniversary show), but I do remember Kosmic Kombucha was FREE, on keg, and tasty. Fun fact: you can get kombucha on tap in Austin!
We were there specifically to see A Giant Dog. It was my first taste, and I loved it. Possibly drunk on the hot Austin sun, I thought the scene was perfect. Singer, Sabrina, was fit as ever. She danced around on stage in a tank top and shorts, swinging around, jumping on amps, and flipping her hair. She was confident. Her presence was empowering and entertaining. Throughout the set my friend was schooling me on the band’s history and connections they have to artists in town. That’s when Sweet Spirit came up.
Sweet Spirit (described as country-rock) shares 3 members with A Giant Dog, but the sound is quite different and, although Sweet Spirit is a 9-piece country rock band, it’s still enjoyable to fans of A Giant Dog because you’re getting Sabrina’s attitude spread evenly across the bands.
“The Power” is one of my favorites by them, and the video is so aesthetically pleasing. I’m getting Gaga vibes, Rocky Horror, and even Flaming Lips.
Check out both bands at Hotel Vegas this month (this venue is a personal favorite!) when Hotel Vegas celebrates 7 years with 77 bands, including Sweet Spirit at the top of the list. A week later, you can catch A Giant Dog (ha!) and find more love for the Austin, TX music scene.
