The Soft Dive of Oblivion

“How’s It Going to be” is a song by the band Third Eye Blind about a relationship that has disintegrated for the narrator, who continually probes his partner to consider what life will be like after the relationship is ended.  Towards the end of the song, the music seems to reach a climax and the narrator proceeds to sing the next part in a manner resembling yelling.  This adds an element of desperation which is fitting because he sings the only two lines of the song that imply he actually wants the relationship to work.  By saying “The soft dive of oblivion” in between these lines, and repeating it after, the narrator makes the reality of the breakup more accessible for his partner in order to encourage her to fully consider what is happening.  The situation is effectively condensed into the single word “oblivion”.
