Cheryl Tobin's Artistic Inspiration
If you've been on Instagram lately you've probably seen some of the amazing 3EB inspired art work created by Cheryl Tobin.
3EB music took on a whole new meaning for Cheryl after experiencing a tragic event in her life. Cheryl answered a few questions about her art work and how 3EB has inspired her creations...
Ali Kery-Hanewicz: Tell us a little about yourself, where you are from, what you do besides creating beautiful artwork and calligraphy, how long have you been creating artwork, what inspires you.
Cheryl Tobin: My name is Cheryl Tobin and I am 28 years old. I was born and raised in Maryland but moved to Cincinnati, Ohio three years ago. I started watching calligraphy videos all the time and found them mesmerizing. But my bad handwriting made it seem impossible to learn. One day, I heard someone say that your handwriting doesn’t have to be good to be good at calligraphy and I was sold! Once I mastered basic lettering, I started doing watercolor backgrounds and embossing. It’s all so relaxing and I think it can be really therapeutic. It gives me something positive to focus on when I start to feel overwhelmed by life. When you write lyrics, you have to slow it down and you really think about what you’re writing. That allows you to process the concept, the depth, the meaning of that lyric. I love it! My greatest obsession is music. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m one of those people who knows almost every song on the radio. Music really inspires me because I love writing song lyrics that are deep, and meaningful, and eloquent.
AKH: How long have you been a fan of 3EB? Have you been to any concerts? Have you ever given Stephan a piece of your artwork?
CT: I grew up in the 90's, so of course I was in love with 'Semi-Charmed Life' when it came out. During my high school years, I met two girls, Lexi and Krista, who became my closest friends. They were obsessed with 3EB and from there, I started to fully appreciate the band. I listened to their CD's from beginning to end and their music was playing constantly when we were together (which was always). Soon after we graduated high school in 2007, Lexi passed away in a car accident. It was then that 3EB became important to me on a whole different level. The songs were a connection to Lexi that could never be taken from me. They were memories and feelings I would never forget and never let go. I have seen Third Eye Blind three times in concert. In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 2009, Louisville, Kentucky in 2016 and in Silver Spring, Maryland in 2017. The 2017 concert was one of the best nights of my life, everything was perfect. We were super close to the stage and the concert was amazing!
AKH: Do you have a favorite 3EB song, or lyrics that really speak to you?
CT: Coming up with an absolute favorite would be impossible! Even a top 5 would be hard! I love 'The Background' because it reminds me of Lexi. One of my favorite lyrics is, "And I’m hanging on your words, like I always used to do. The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you.” I have “And the four right chords can make me cry” tattooed on my shoulder. It describes perfectly how I feel about music. I’m more about the lyrics than the chords, but it’s that idea that music can be whatever I need. It’s my therapy. It can make me cry or make me happy again when I’m sad, it can calm me down. It’s everything!
AKH: Are there any other bands that inspire you to create artwork?
Cheryl Tobin: The only other band that comes close to my feelings about 3EB (music and lyrics) is Dave Matthews Band. Their music is very special to me because of my mom. They are like 3EB for me, in that so many of their lyrics really speak to me. They’re beautiful and eloquent and remind me of my sweet Mama!
AKH: If you could tell Stephan or 3EB fans one fact about yourself, what would it be, what would you want people to know about you!
CT: If I could tell Stephan one thing, it’s something that all 3EB fans already know. And that is: he makes a difference. His lyrics help me get through sad times. His songs make happy times even happier. There is nothing I love more than driving on a warm day, windows down, blasting 3eb and singing at the top of my lungs. His music is important to so many people. Thank you, Stephan, for sharing that with us!
AKH: Are you planning on attending any shows in the near future?
CT: I’m not really a huge fan of music festivals so I probably won’t be going to any of those but I am planning on making every effort to see them next time they’re near me in Cincinnati or in Maryland!
