Interview: Hannah Menicucci

“Third Eye Blind is more than music-it’s a lifestyle.” A quote from Hannah’s interview that mirrors what so many of us have found through our love of the band. Stephan singing lyrics that make us feel less alone- the soundtrack of our emotional lives.

What's your favorite Third Eye Blind album?

HANNAH MENICUCCI: I went with the latest EP We Are Drugs, because it's relevant empowering. Third Eye Blind's Self Titled's album is great when I'm in love, Out of the Vein is the best breakup album ever.

Third Eye Blind fans are all ages and some are brand new and some have been there since day one. How long have you been "in the blind?”

HM: Thanks to today’s technology, I have had access to most of Third Eye Blind’s discography. I became a fan through a boyfriend. The first album I fell in love with was Out of the Vein, but their self-titled album got me through the breakup with said boyfriend. It has been about 7 years since I became a true fan of 3EB.

Have you had a major point in your life that 3EB has helped you through it and how?

HM: The song “How’s it Going to Be” actually prevented me from breaking up with my emotionally abusive boyfriend. Ursa Major’s song “Why Can’t You Be” helped me do it, with the line, “I keep provoking you to leave me”. Breaking up with him was so freeing.

What are your favorite lyrics and why?

HM: My anthem in 2015 was “Deep Inside of You”. The line “I would walk with my people if I could find them” made me cry on my drive home from work. It was an isolating time for me.

Is there one particular 3eb concert that stands out to you from all the others? Why?

HM: The most recent concert, July 23, 2017 in Berkeley, was their most powerful performance I have ever witnessed. I was in the very front for the first time ever, and it was emotionally overwhelming. I was fan-girling so hard and sobbing the whole time. I’ve cried at other shows of theirs, but I was so close this time, it’s a completely difference experience! That’s the only way to see them.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 was awarded to Bob Dylan "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". He was the first musician honored. A lot of Third Eye Blind fans love the music in large part because of Stephan’s lyrics. Why do you think that is? What special qualities are in Stephan’s lyrics that make them more like poetry than those of the average songwriter?

HM: Stephen went to Berkeley and majored in English Literature. I think that has a lot to do with his work as a poet. I’m unfamiliar with Bob Dylan, but Stephan speaks in metaphors. He’s a modern poet.

What’s your favorite line of the Mission Statement and why?

HM: “We seek impact with friends”.   This rings so true for me. As you grow up, you discover what your values are, and who in your life shares them, who doesn’t. It’s great to have stuff in common with friends. But music is another level. And as you know, Third Eye Blind is more than music-it’s a lifestyle. When you connect with someone on that level, it’s different. And Third Eye Blind has been around long enough for fans to form this religion with other fans, their children. It’s incredible. It’s powerful. Made of Lions.

What is the greatest thing that being a fan has brought into your life?

HM: The greatest thing I have gained from being a fan is emotion. I’m at a dark place right now, going through the motions with a job I hate, a house I’m trapped in, unreliable people. I’m so numb. But when I listen to “Misfits” I get chills because I relate so hard. And at the Berkeley show, I’ve never felt like that. It was overwhelming. Everything else in my life was blurry I could only focus on the moment.
