Soundtrack to Our Life: Narcolepsy

Artist: Matea Friedel

The opening lyrics from Narcolepsy, “I’m on a train, but there’s no one at the helm / And there’s a demon in my brain, who starts to overwhelm...” have been very relevant in my life recently. I did this drawing as an expression of this feeling; a feeling of being trapped and suffocated by my own mind. I have never been able to articulate my feelings well with words. Drawings have always been my way of expressing my emotions to the world.

Tell us what we see in this art work?

This drawing is a depiction of a human man crumpled on the ground, clutching his neck and head while a smoke explosion of mental chaos and despair engulfs him. The explosion is happening in his mind, an expression of anxiety, stress, and depression. A feeling that many know all too well.
