Hug a Drummer – Second Time’s a Charm

In 2013, Third Eye Blind was on tour and scheduled to play in Portland, OR. I hadn’t seen them live in eons but knew I needed to. A friend and I set out for the show around noon, in what should have been about a three-hour drive. We spent 9 hours stuck on the freeway, convinced we were going to make it, then completely bummed when we realized we just weren’t meant to be there. Unfortunately, there was a fatal accident along our path and we never made it.

Fast forward to 2016 when they announced another Portland date, set for April. My friend and I were hesitant to attempt that trek again but, knew we couldn’t miss it and needed to make up for the last time! We went all out with the VIP experience and decided that taking the train was a smart idea.

It was a quick overnight trip but, wow, what an incredible night! Sound check was fun to experience and, afterwards, we met Stephan and Brad. It was a quick meeting, but I managed to keep my composure and they both were easy to talk to and very nice to us. Brad came out first and I remember thinking he was taller than I had imagined, for whatever reason. Also, when I introduced myself, he mentioned that I looked familiar. I replied with an “Uh-oh” and a laugh. I then told him he probably recognized me from Twitter, as it seemed that was where most of the interactions were taking place. My friend reiterated and Brad figured that was probably how he ‘knew’ me.

After all these years, I appreciate how cool and down to earth Brad is. It was great to have the opportunity to meet him and Stephan, and I will remember that day forever.
