Hug a Drummer - Greatest of the Greats
When asked if you could be in a rock band what instrument would you want to play? My answer would be drums. I never got to see some of the greats live: John Bonham, Keith Moon, Moe Tucker or Ginger Baker. Yet, I have been lucky enough to see Max Weinberg, Chad Smith and Travis Barker and quite a few others.
If you ask me who is my favorite drummer? Hands down it would be Brad Hargreaves. When it comes to heart and style there is nothing more exhilarating than watching Brad. I have been fortunate enough to meet him on numerous occasions before and after shows.
My first time I was too star-struck to really say anything but “Hi!” Later that night we were on an escalator in a casino with Brad and Stephan and my friend kept pushing me forward, but all I could do was get the setlist signed. My next time was less awkward and I was impressed with how kind and generous he is. I told him about my friend, Laurie, who suffers from RA and that she's a big fan and he threw her the stick in VA Beach, but a big guy tackled it out of her hand. He signed a pic and personalized it for her and made sure I got the stick that night to give to her. I have been the recipient of many of Brad's drumsticks, which have a place of honor on my rock wall. He said I have too many sticks yet he seems to know when a show is special to me and still throws me one!
Brad always just makes you feel so comfortable and at ease. We had already done multiple shows on Dopamine Tour which we had VIP. I told him we don't have to keep doing pics. He just looked at me and said ,"Yeah but we change outfits!" I laughed and now it's just old hat to get a pic with Brad almost every show. Let's just say it's a “Rite of Passage!” When we were at the Myrtle Beach show he took his generosity to another level and actually let me take a pic sitting at his drum set!
One of my best Brad moments was at the Philly show and Jaime (his wife) had come to watch soundcheck. She was due in about another month and a half. I told Brad how cute Jaime looked pregnant. Brad turned and looked back at where Jaime was sitting with a perfect smile and gleam in his eye he said, "Doesn't she?" That night was my last show of Dopamine Summer Tour. Brad caught me tearing up a bit and threw me his stick.
Is it any wonder why he is my absolute favorite drummer and all-around great guy! Keep being you Brad! You’re perfect! (Even when you laughed when I fell ass first on the stage in Kingston, UK!!!)
