Expert of the Week: Susan Zuckerman-Seely

Tatiana: Tell me about yourself.

Susan: I am a mom, a daughter, and a sister who loves her family and friends fiercely. I am a recovered meth addict who has been fortunate enough to turn my life around and am happier and healthier than I ever have been in my adult life. I am blessed to be able travel a great deal with people I love.

T: When was your first 3EB show?

S: Fall 1997 at the Fillmore in San Francisco. It was sold out and I went anyway by myself. I bought a ticket from someone off the street. I was dead center about 50 feet from the stage. Stephan was wearing green leather pants that he said his fans had sent him for his birthday, he was barefoot and at various points throughout the show he was climbing all over the giant speakers. Stephan threw a tambourine into the crowd and pandemonium ensued. I ended up with a metal disc from it. I still have it. During that show, I experienced a high that I've never experienced before. Not a drug high... this was different. I was instantly hooked to this music, this band.

T:What 3EB song means the most to you? Why?

S: If I have to pick one it is going to be “I Want You” off of Self-Titled, just because of the feelings it invokes in me. "You want to know how deeply my soul goes Deeper than bones Deeper than bones" If I could pick another it would be “Rites of Passage” because it reminds me of all the positive changes I've made and to keep going.

T: You've met the boys many times. What is your favorite interaction with the band? Why?

S: Dopamine release tour at the San Diego show, summer of 2015. The meet and greet had been postponed until after the show due to the band arriving late. Instead of the normal meet and greet, Stephan surprised us and had all of us sit around him on the steps leading to the stage. I sat right at his feet while he played an acoustic set, it was so intimate and so special. I was not the only one crying at times during that set and I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face four days after.

T: What's your favorite song(s) to hear live? Why?

S: “I Want You” and “God of Wine” because they are beautiful and touch my soul. Anything from “Out of the Vein” because I agree with Stephan, "It is a highly underrated album" and my favorite song, “Rites of Passage” because it reminds me I am a warrior.

T: If you could travel with one member of the band, who would you choose? Where would you like to go?

S: I would go to Ireland with Kryz to hang out and have him show me around. It's somewhere that I only visited once for two days 25 years ago. I have no doubt that would be a trip to remember! If you could help choose 5 songs to put on a set list, which ones would you choose? “Dao of St Paul” “Darkness” “About to Break” “Can't Get Away” “Red Star” Best 3EB show?

S: Why was it the best for you? It would have to be the Dazzleships’ show in February of 2016. Why? It was secret show, it was honoring the amazing David Bowie and I got to share it with a fellow Misfit who it was extra special for. The band were in rare form that night performing as their alter egos. It was such a special, crazy, and magical night in a tiny venue in my hometown with people I love. Where is your preferred spot when on rails? Why? Anywhere as long as it's rails with my people (Okay, not anywhere, I don't want to be too far over at either end).

T: Anything you'd like to add?

S: For a very long time I thought I was alone in my love for Third Eye Blind. Once I found my people, it has enriched my life in countless ways. I've made friends that truly get me. My truth: If you want to see me at my true happiest go to a Third Eye Blind show with me.
